THE LODGE AT CLEVELAND HEIGHTS

At this busy vacationing time of the year, we at Cleveland Heights want to be sure that you are aware of the level of care that your pet receives while it is in our lodging facility.
Since our accommodations are very popular, reservations need to be made well in advance of the time that you will need to leave your pets. Please note the information below regarding our deposit policy for reservations. Our Cottages and Sunshine Suites are available for the dogs, and the Cat's Inn Townhomes
® are a special home-away-from home for the kitties.

We are pleased to be able to care for your pets in our facility, seven days a week, just as we would want our own pets cared for- with lots of love and fun! Don't forget to add a "Yappy Hour" for the dogs! Just to clue you in, that's the time of afternoon when we break out the Frosty Paws and everybody hunkers down for a special, cool treat!  Of course you can also add additional Playtimes for your dogs, if you think they would appreciate the extra playing time while you are gone.

Just know that we have a wonderful, trained staff who really enjoy caring for your four-legged family members! From  Katie's wonderful Hydro-surge baths to Aunt Sharon's hugs and kisses, and Miss Mary's lovin',  everybody gets spoiled at the Lodge!!! Also, anyone who would like to come visit our facilities - we are ALWAYS open for visiting ANYTIME!

DEPOSITS NOW REQUIRED

Because of the popularity of our Lodge, we have had to start taking deposits when reservations are made. Too many last minute no-show reservations   have resulted in our new deposit policy. We must be fair to make our facilities available to those on the waiting list who want to be able to leave their pets with us.

The deposit is refundable if we are notified that you will not be needing to use our facilities at least three days before the date of the reservation.

Since the amount of the deposit depends on the length of the stay, you can check with us about the necessary deposit when you make your next reservation.  863-646-2995

Summer Hazards for Pets- from the ASPCA

Summer brings days of fun in the sun, but summer can also bring hazards to our pets. Lawn and garden products, toxic plants and mushrooms, and other outdoor hazards such as charcoal lighter fluid and pool chemicals, can pose problems if pets get into them. Below is a list of relative toxicity of various summer hazards to which a pet may be exposed.

Low Toxicity: (may cause gastrointestinal upset, but unlikely to cause serious problems unless very large amounts are ingested)

  • Glow jewelry
  • N-P-K fertilizers (no added insecticide or herbicide; iron level <1%)
  • Bone meal (no added insecticide or herbicide)
  • Mosquito coils (foreign body potential from coil material)
  • Mosquito Dunks (Bacillus thuringiensis)
  • Charcoal briquettes (unused, no added lighter fluid)
  • Termite stakes, ant baits, yard insecticides, and roach baits containing sulfluramid (N--ethylperfluorooctanesulfonamide) or hydramethylnon (2% or less)

Moderate toxicity: (may cause significant signs beyond mild gastrointestinal upset)

  • Charcoal lighter fluid
  • Moldy items from trash, yard or compost pile (tremorgenic mycotoxins)
  • Diazinon or chlorpyrifos (Dursban) granules (>2%)
  • DEET-containing insect repellants
  • Citronella lamps/torches
  • Spring blooming bulbs (see our website under Publications for more information)

High toxicity: (potential for very serious or life-threatening signs)

  • Pool chemicals (concentrated hypochlorites, cationic detergents)
  • Metaldehyde containing snail/slug baits
  • Zinc phosphide-containing systemic insecticides
  • Methomyl-containing fly baits
  • Disulfoton-containing insecticides (found in some rose and flower care products)

FYI  -  CHAH IS A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE

In this world where it is very easy to accept common situations as ok, we at Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital want you to know that we are very strict about the people who work with your pets. All applicants for positions here must have negative results on a professional drug screening test before they are employed. In addition, for the safety of your pets and our employees, periodic drug tests of any employees can be requested at any time during their employment by CHAH, a positive test resulting in termination of employment.

                      Secondhand Smoke Harms Pets!

It's true. Secondhand smoke affects pets as well as people. Just take a look at these study results.

A 2001 Colorado State University study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, showed secondhand smoke can cause cancer of the sinus in dogs. The study stated dogs with long noses were twice as likely to develop cancer of the sinus than those with short or medium noses. However, dogs with short or medium noses were more likely to develop lung cancer from secondhand smoke than those with longer ones.

A 2007 University of Minnesota study showed that cats who live with smokers have nicotine and other toxins in their urine.

A 2007 Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine study showed a connection between secondhand smoke and mouth cancer in cats, called squamous cell carcinoma.

A recent study from the University of Massachusetts showed that cats exposed to smoke are twice as likely to develop lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes, than those that aren't.

PET POISON ALERT: COCOA BEAN MULCH CAN BE TOXIC TO DOGS
Cocoa Bean MulchIf your dog likes to spend his summer grazing in your garden, his treat-seeking nose may lead him to one danger in particular: the sweet-smelling, but potentially harmful cocoa bean mulch. Made of cocoa bean shells and considered desirable for its eventual degradation into organic fertilizer, this gardener’s choice can be toxic to canines if eaten in large quantities—and some dogs have been known to eat amazing amounts!

PETS HAVE TEETH TOO!

Prevention of dental disease should be included as part of your pet's overall preventative wellness program, just like vaccinations, heartworm prevention, etc. All of the major Veterinary organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association feel that the dental health of your pet is very  important and they have committed  a great deal of effort toward educating pet owners about the importance of taking care of their pets' teeth.  Here at CHAH, we feel that this is so essential to your pets' health that we are dedicating this month's newsletter to  helping you learn why the care of your pets' teeth is so vital to their good health.

Imagine what would happen if you didn’t brush your teeth regularly or visit the dentist for cleanings. The same applies to your pet’s teeth. Regular dental care is as important for your pet as it is for you!!!

Did you know that periodontal disease is the most common infectious disease in both dogs and cats? In fact, 85% of adult pets have some form of periodontal disease. If left untreated, that can mean pain, bad breath and tooth loss for your dog or cat. Chronic infection in the oral cavity can spread harmful bacteria to the bloodstream and infect the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. One milligram of plaque alone contains over 1 trillion bacteria—bacteria that can cause disease. Fortunately, most periodontal disease can be prevented by daily plaque removal and regular professional care.

Does Your Best Friend's Mouth Look Like this?Poor oral hygiene in a dog

We at Cleveland Heights feel that your pet's health is only as good as the health of his teeth! Please read some of these commonly asked questions about pets and their teeth and think about the last time your pets' teeth were cleaned . Actually, when was the last time that you really LOOKED at your pets' teeth??click here for more information on your pet and his dental health

For the Protection of Your Dogs, We Have a New Vaccination Protocol at CHAH

Bordatella, commonly known as Kennel Cough, can be prevented in dogs by regular administration of  a preventative vaccine. CHAH strongly believes in well-care for your pets and it is for this reason that we are now requiring that all of  the dogs in our care be given the Bordatella vaccine every six months.
Kennel cough is a bronchitis characterized by a harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding like “something stuck in my dog’s throat.” It is analogous to a chest cold in  humans. It is a bacterial disease which can be prevented.

For the protection of all pets, any dogs admitted to our facility will need to show proof of a Kennel Cough vaccine within the past six months, or we will need to administer that vaccine before the pet can be lodged or groomed  at CHAH.  Because the infection is exacerbated by stress, and it takes 5 days to develop immunity to the disease following the vaccine administration, dogs should be dosed a week before they are scheduled  for lodging or grooming. We use an intranasal vaccine which has very few side-effects.
We are grateful for the trust that you have in our caring for your pets. This increased vaccine protocol is one more  way that we can help to protect your dogs from an easily preventable bacterial infection

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  does your pet have a microchip in case of emergency??? call 863-646-2995 today to get one!
