AT CHAH!

Karen Viertell leads the second
puppy obedience class on 1-20-04. Recognizing the importance
of good behavior in our canine friends, we are very pleased to have
Karen teaching classes at CHAH. Call 646-2995 for more information on

Dr. Karen
Morrow, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Radiology
Dr. Morrow comes into our
practice every Wednesday afternoon to educate our staff and to perform
specialty radiological procedures. She has the highest credentials available
for diagnosing and teaching in this area of expertise. She is shown
above doing an ultrasound examination of a patient at CHAH. We welcome Dr.
Morrow and appreciate her professionalism. This is just another example
of how Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital strives to give pets the best
health care possible, while developing a staff of well-trained
professionals.

Dr.
Heidi Lobprise, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Dentists,
and Pfizer Animal Health provide seminars on developments in Veterinary
Dentistry

Paired with Phizer Animal
Health, Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital looks forward to wonderful training opportunities
such as the dental seminars that were held for our
Hospital during the week of June 2, 2003. Dr. Heidi Lobprise, past
President of the American Veterinary Dental Society and professor at Texas
A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, lectured and conducted wet
labs in the Hospital, teaching our staff new dental techniques and
treatments. Utilizing our new dental equipment, Dr. Lobprise
emphasized the importance of dental x-rays and evaluation of serious
dental problems and their long-term effect on the welfare of the pet.

Take
a Look at our New EQUIPMENT!!!
All
of this is here at CHAH to help us take better care of your PET!!
We are proud to be one of the
only hospitals in the area to offer the benefits of Laser Surgery for your
pets! We are very pleased with the results of the Laser Surgery - because the
procedures are less intrusive, the animals have less bleeding, less stress,
and quicker recovery time.

We also have a
variety of diagnostic tools available including X-ray, both dental and
full-scale machines, EKG, EEG, and ultrasound. We have recently purchased a
Med-Rx Machine, which allows the Medical Staff to digitally document a pet's
medical condition and thus aid in treatment and care. We also have a digital
endoscope, high speed dental equipment, automatic x-ray processors, and
very sophisticated in-house laboratory equipment that facilitates early diagnosis and
treatment for your pets.

Dr.
J. E. Breazile Teaches at CHAH

Dr.
Jim Breazile, world-renowned author and professor of Physiology at
Oklahoma State University, has worked with the Doctors and Technicians
at Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital for the past twenty years. He was
recently in town, lecturing and teaching the Medical staff in the
areas of renal medicine and electrodiagnostic procedures.
He is shown below demonstrating the finer points of electrodiagnosis
with Drs. Houghton and Davis and Tonya Tromblee, a veterinary
intern from Oklahoma State University.

We
are proud to have Dr. Breazile available for the continuing education
of our staff, he is a friend and a great mentor. This is just one of
the ways that Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital continually strives to
pursue the newest techniques in veterinary medicine. It is our goal
to be able to use this knowledge as a basis for the best care possible
for our clients and their pets.

We
not only spend our time fishing for answers in Veterinary Medicine
while Dr. Breazile is in Florida, we also do some fishing at Little
Gasparilla Island in the Gulf of Mexico! |

THROUGH
THE EYES OF MY CANINE
(Does my Dog
See Colors Like I do?)
Owners who want to better understand
their canine companions must recognize that dogs
see the world from a different visual perspective. The differences begin with
the structure of
the eye. "We have a good idea what canines see because we know the
make-up of the
retina of a dog's eye," says Dr. Ralph Hamor, a veterinarian and
specialist in ophthalmology
at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching
Hospital.
The retina, which covers the back of the inside of the eyeball, contains cones
and rods-two
types of light-sensitive cells. Cones provide color perception and detailed
sight, while rods
detect motion and vision in dim light. Dogs, which have rod-dominated retinas,
see better in
the dark than humans do and have motion-oriented vision. However, because they
have
only about one-tenth the concentration of cones that humans have, dogs do not
see colors
as humans do.
"I generally explain that dogs see like a color-blind human," says
Dr. Hamor. "Many people
think that a person who is red/green color blind cannot see any color, but
there are
variations of being color blind. Most people have vision that is trichromatic
(three color
variations). People who are red/green color blind are dichromatic (two color
variations).
Dogs can pick out two colors-blue-violet and yellow-and they can differentiate
among
shades of gray." Dogs are unable to distinguish among green, yellow,
orange, and red. They
also have difficulty differentiating greens and grays. (CONT.)
CHAH
ELECTS TO USE NEW HUMAN ANESTHESIA FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR PETS!!
Cleveland Heights Animal
Hospital has chosen to change their anesthesia
from Isoflurane inhaled anesthesia to Sevoflurane. Sevoflurane is a brand new
halogenated hydrocarbon inhalant that has been recently approved for use in
animals.
The primary benefit in
using this type of anesthesia is that the animal reacts very quickly to it,
and recovers from the effects of the anesthesia equally as quickly. This
product does not have the odor associated with the isofurane-type anesthesias
and the animals do not tend to react negatively to it, therefore lowering
stress as they go under its effects. This reduces the trauma on the animal
and, with the quick recovery rate, the animal is on his feet soon after the
surgery is completed.
We are pleased to be
able to bring the most modern techniques in animal care to our family of pets
that we serve at our Hospital.

Potty
Training for Puppies is Possible AND Preferred!!
Debbie
Houghton
As owners of all animals, and puppies in
particular, are aware, if you are going to have a new member of the family, it
is necessary to instill in that pet the common courtesy of eliminating where
YOU choose, not just at the whim of the pet. There are a number of time, and
success, tested methods that will help you to organize the bodily function
patterns for your pet. You will need to choose the one that will work best
with your schedule and life style. It is true that YOU must be the first one
to be house-trained, then you can show the pet what you want him to do! (Continued)
