A new
Pet Emergency Supply Kit
was posted on the
Department of Homeland Security website
to encourage pet owners to prepare for emergencies. The federal agency
worked with the AVMA, American Kennel Club and other veterinary groups to
create the
brochure, which has
important information for preparing pets for emergency situations.
Inner Strength

If you can
start the day without caffeine,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no
fault of your own, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax and sleep without chemical help,
If you can do all of these things,
You are probably the family

Archaeologists Find Evidence of Beloved Pets
Canine Mummies Found
An archaeological find shows that people who lived between AD 900
and 1350 not only loved their pets dearly but believed they would join
them in an afterlife.
While some say pampered pets are a
generational phenomenon, archaeologists have recently discovered that
ancient man loved their canines enough to bury the pets next to family
members when they died. A recent dig in southern Peru uncovered dogs
that resemble the golden retriever and lived between AD 900 and AD
1350. They were wrapped like mummies and buried beside family members,
which indicates a belief that dogs were headed for the afterlife,
according to a
BBC report.

New Vaccine Policies
at CHAH
Following the recommendations of
the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the
doctors at CHAH have added Leptospirosis vaccine to our individualized
health plans for the dogs that we care for.
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can affect both
animals AND people. It is caused by a bacteria found in the urine of
infected animals. The bacteria can cause symptoms similar to
the flu, but it can also develop into a more sever, life-threatening
illness with infections in the kidney, liver, brain, lung, and heart.
The illness can be spread by infected domesticated animals, and and also
by animals found in the wild. Because of increased building and
development into areas that were previously rural, pets may be exposed
to more wildlife including rodents, opossums, or squirrels, that might
be infected.
We feel that it is important to proceed with vaccinating dogs (it
is rare in cats) for this disease. The clinical signs of Leptospirosis
vary. Commonly, infected dogs might show signs of fever, abdominal pain,
refusal to eat, severe weakness and muscle pain, or stiffness. When you
have your dog vaccinated for Leptospirosis, the first
vaccination will be administered, and then that will be followed with another,
booster, vaccination in three
weeks. Protection lasts from 8-12 months and unless your pet is high
risk - if the pet lives outdoors, goes hunting, etc.-, the manufacturer
of the vaccine recommends annual re-vaccination after the first series.
Call us to set up an
appointment to have your pets' vaccines up-dated to include
Leptospirosis protection.
